Chikmagalur- A Green Slice of Heaven atop the Western Ghats

Chikmagalur, the Coffee Land of Karnataka, is much familiar to nature-lovers as the synonym of tranquillity. With its verdant greenery, cascading waterfalls, enticing climate, coffee-smelling hills, this hill station in the south-west Karnataka is a green slice of heaven atop of the majestic Western Ghats. This pristine hill station must have undoubtedly secured a spot in the bucket list of every nature-lover, who wants to escape from the rambunctious noises of the routine life and experience the nature in its best form.

Nestled amidst the mystic hills of the Western Ghats; surrounded by the cascading waterfalls; and blanketed by the verdant greenery of grasslands, Chikmagalur, the Coffee Land of Karnataka, is much familiar to nature-lovers as the synonym of tranquillity. This hill-town, located in the south-west Karnataka, is one such place that can de-stress its visitors by offering a tranquil retreat blended with an enticing climate. Sprawling in the lush green mountains, Chikmagalur offers the mesmerizing views of the thick Shola forests and lush green bushes throughout the ways. This pristine hill station, located in the foothills of the Mullayanagiri range, must have undoubtedly secured a spot in the bucket list of every nature-lover, who wants to escape from the rambunctious noises of the routine life and experience the nature in its best form.

The town derives its name from the Kannada word ‘Chikmagaluru’ literally means "The town of the younger daughter". Stories say that the town has been given as a dowry to the younger daughter of Rukmangada, the legendary chief of Sakkarepatna. Chikmagalur is a part of the Malenad region of Karnataka which is largely forested area that covers the slopes of the Western Ghats. Hence, Chikmagalur receives heavy rainfall throughout the year and temperature seldom crosses 25-degree-Celsius, which makes the town a favourite summer retreat. The umpteen number of tourist attractions in Chikmagalur, especially its favourable climate and coffee estates, are popular among the travellers across the globe. The multiple hills located at great heights are proven vantage points that offer the opportunity to enjoy the panoramic views of the enthralling beauty of Western Ghats.

Chikmagalur is around 250kms from the state-capital Bengaluru, 152kms from Mangalore. The place is well connected by roads and rail. Bus services by state-run corporation are available from all the major cities in Karnataka and will take around 6-7 hours. The town is accessible by train also. A new rail corridor between Bengaluru and Chikmagalur has been inaugurated in 2014 and has train services daily. Another major junction near to Chikmagalur is Birur. Though, the town has no domestic airport, there is a small landing strip used for private jets. The nearest airport is Mangalore international airport. Bengaluru International Airport is another alternative.

Mullayanagiri

Mullayanagiri is the highest peak in Karnataka. With a height of 1930 metres, the mountain beckons you to scale it. The most important attraction of Mullayanagiri is the 4km trekking that begins from Sarpadhari. The spring season is the ideal time to trek here as there will be less rain. Hundreds of people climb the hill to offer their prayers at a sm  all temple dedicated to Lord Shiva on top of the peak. The breath-taking scenery of the region, exotic flora, and the thrilling ascent of the peak is an ideal blend for anyone who loves adventure. The diligent upward walk is a bit precarious, but when the cold winds touches your bosom when you pass every slope it will relish the challenge. The serpentine trek trails here are serene and are known for nature's raw beauty. The trek is through lush grasslands, rugged rocks, and also statues of Shiva's celestial bull Nandi. Once you reach the top you will be received by the enthralling view of the Western Ghats in its full-fledged glory.

Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary

Situated 35km from the Chikmagalur town, Bhadra wildlife sanctuary is a protected area and Project Tiger area. It is home to many wild animals and birds, and its exotic flora and fauna is worth watching. The sanctuary got its name because the river Bhadra, which has its origin in the Mullayanagiri range, flows through it. The wildlife safari is one of the main attractions here. Being a Project Area, you can see the tigers up close in its natural habitats. There are a lot of deciduous trees which adds to the greenery that pervades the sanctuary. The forest, which is usually damp, is full of wide varieties of flora. More than hundred species of trees can be found here which include teak, rosewood etc. Also, there are special bird-watching expeditions, when ornithologist accompany you to watch around 250 species of birds present in the sanctuary.

Baba Budangiri (Datta Peeta)

Also known as the Chandra Drona Parvatha, Datta Peeta is a popular tourist destination with rich sightseeing attractions. The mountain is named after the Muslim saint Baba Budan. The main attraction here are three caves here, where siddhas (religious oracles) are buried and ceremonies (Urs) are held here annually. The scenic beauty of the region coupled with the intriguing caves makes Datta Peeta a popular tourist spot. Another attraction is Sri Guru Dattatreya Bababudanswamy’s Darga, an ancient institution, considered holy for Hindus and Muslims. Here the puja is led by an unmarried man. A unique distinction this mountain range accounts for is that the first coffee plantation was grown here. There are countless coffee plantations on the sylvan slopes of this mountain range.

Kemmangundi

This outstanding hill station is situated at a height of about 1400 metres. Also known as the Sri Krishnarajendra Hill Station, Kemmangundi was a summer retreat centre of Mysore Wodeyars. A must-visit attraction here is a guest house named Raj Bhavan and its Rose Garden. The Raj Bhavan is a favourite sunrise and sunset spot, where you can view the splendid routine of nature at its best. Another interesting spot here is the Z point. Being a vantage point, you have to ascent the slope for an hour to reach there. The Z point is frequented by visitors to view the sunrise and sunset. If you go downhill there is the two-tiered Hebbe Falls, descending from a height of over 150 metres. Hebbe falls are a sight to remember and cherish.

Sharadamba Temple

The Sharadamba Temple, located in Shringeri town in Chikmagaluru, is dedicated to the goddess of wisdom. It is believed that Adi Shankaracharya, the famous Hindu practitioner set up his practice at this place. The temple, built in 8th century, is located on the banks of the Tungabhadra River. Earlier the image of the goddess was made of sandalwood but was later was replaced with a gold version. Students attempting important examinations come here to offer puja and seek blessings.

Kalhatti Falls

Situated near to Kemmanagudi, the Kalhatti Falls is one true blessing of nature that encompasses all its charm and purity. In the backdrop of mountains and dense foliage, the falls revitalise all its surroundings and the visitors.

There is a small temple in the vicinity. This temple is sandwiched in the waterfalls. The temple has idols and stone structures. Throughout the year, devotees visit this place and offer their prayers here.
